Christa Müller-Kessler (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena) uploaded on her academia.edu page the preprint version of “The Missing Quire of Codex Climaci rescriptus Containing 1-2 Corinthians in Christian Palestinian Aramaic (Sinai, Syriac NF 38)“.
Here’s the abstract from Müller-Kessler’s article: “The eighteenth quire of Codex Climaci rescriptus, which had been missing from the manuscript since its first publication, resurfed now among the New Finds from St Catherine’s Monastery in 1975. Listed as Sinai, Syriac NF 38 it contains the missing chapters in the Syriac translation of the liber ad pastorem by the Sinaitic monk John Climacus in the upper text. It is a palimpsest as were the previous parts of this unique manuscript and adds quite a number of unattested passages of 1–2 Corinthians in Christian Palestinian Aramaic. The eight folios enlarge the lexical collection as well as the grammatical forms within this rather small Western Aramaic dialect”.
This article is going to be published in a highly anticipated collected volume edited by Claudia Rapp, Jana Gruskova, Grigory Kessel, and Giulia Rossetto, which is entitled New Light on Old Manuscripts: Recent Advances in Palimpsest Studies and Their Contribution to the Sinai Palimpsests Project and expected to appear this year. It will showcase some of the most advanced research that was carried out in recent years at St Catherine’s Monastery and elsewhere in the realm of palimpsest studies. It will be of equal importance to the topic of this blog. This is exemplarily demonstrated by Müller-Kessler’s study, which illustrates how a fragment from Sinai’s New Finds (MS Sinai, St Catherine’s Monastery, Syr. NF 38) offers proof for the Sinaitic origin of Codex Climaci Rescriptus (MS Washington, Museum of the Bible, Codex Climaci Rescriptus).
